“The Ultrakill Museum is real!”

First started as a singular EP around the late end of 2022, Hakita’s “Music for Virtual Museums” took a trek into both the realms of ambient vapor and slushwave from an artist who was delving into it for the first time. Using only prior knowledge of the genre through osmosis and a vision of his own, a compelling and concise piece of work was created which we took notice of around the time of its release, watching along up until later on in the following year.

Midway through 2023, a second EP titled “Music for Virtual Malls” was released, with more of a focus on the midi-centric and upbeat stylings of later mallsoft, reminiscent of the experiments of 식료품groceries’ “Ascension” at times, while also implementing previous slushwave techniques into the mix.

Both of these works compliment each other nicely, with the more contemplative notes of “Museums” giving more punch to the boisterous, yet still reserved sounds that “Malls” has to offer. At the same time, the presence of “Malls” as the starter of these two gives a larger sense of finality to “Museums”, allowing for a seamless cycle between the two EPs which make them perfectly suited for a dual release.

To celebrate this release, two artists who are no strangers to slushwave have joined the party, with a longer drone-influenced take coming from ⦓🍊⦔ タンジェリン on the “Malls” side which gives a stronger sense of closure to the EP. On the other end, desert sand feels warm at night has reinterpreted the opener of the “Museums” side in order to give it an uplifting final note. Almost in too much of a happy coincidence, these remixes end up allowing notes from each others’ side to spill over, creating a much more smooth bridge between the two, as well as excellent palate cleansers.
